A quester: Thomas, the protagonist of the trilogy, along with his fellow Gladers take the reigns once again of the role of the questers in the along with their newfound companions from Group B, as well as Brenda and Jorge.
A place to go: The Safe Haven- when Thomas and his companions are given their objective to make it to the safe haven it becomes the only hope for refuge of the world after the Flare.
A stated reason to go there: Survival- once the group makes it out of the maze they think they are free of the hands of WICKED and they are overcome with relief, only to realize that the maze was nothing more than a test, and they are still needed and under the control of WICKED, meaning they have to cooperate and follow through with the Scorch trials or be killed. The hope of survival is what drives them to persevere through their newfound circumstance.
Challenges and Trials: the Gladers and their new allies face unfamiliar circumstances and adversity in a world they don't know. This novel takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where solar flares devastated cities everywhere and a deadly man-made disease, the Flare, meant for chemical warfare was unintentionally released and dread to the general public. The infected hosts of the disease are called "Cranks", they wreak havoc on the desolate and barren wasteland of the Scorch, the place the group finds themselves in. WICKED is another significant barrier in the novel. The group, knowing they are in a trial, are aware of WICKED's ever impending control over their minds. This allows WICKED to change what they perceive as reality and true. As the story progresses we are made aware that there are people whom WICKED has used to change the variable of the Scorch, testing trust and heeding deception.
The real reason to go: upon completing the Scorh trials, the group will have not only survived, but they will helped WICKED to narrow their search for the perfect test subject which in turn helps to find the cure for the Flare. Janson (better known in the novel as the "Rat Man") tells the group that they are all infected with the Flare as an incentive to complete the trials, his claim is in part true. All of them do in fact have the disease, but a portion of the group is immune to the Flare while the rest harbor the disease with the cure being their only hope for survival.
The Scorch Trials the journey the Gladers and company embark on accurately correspond with the elements of a quest found in How to Read Literature like a Professor. Such key elements can be found seamlessly throughout the novel.
